Jose, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After high school, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. At that time, my brother was the manager at an A/C supply store and he kept telling me I should get involved in the A/C business. So I took his advice and went to work for a company. I started as the delivery driver and after a few months, I had the chance to become an install helper. I was excited but it only lasted a few weeks, it was very hot in the attic and I wasn’t used to it so I quit. Though I didn’t stay put long, I went to work for another company doing the same thing but this time I was doing new construction homes. I did that for about a year or so until one day my brother called me and said one of his regular customers was looking for a helper. He explained how smart this man was and how much I could learn from him. So I decided to go work for him. There is where it all began for me, Butch the owner started to really train me in all different areas. Come to find out he was once a teacher of the trade. So I decided I would bring a pen and paper with me and every day while driving to the jobs I would ask him questions and take notes. Butch was amazing I learned so much from him not just about the business of HVAC but also about how to treat your customers and most of all about having integrity. After working for him nearly 5 years, I decided it was time to go out on my own, it was a hard decision to leave him but I knew it was time. He encouraged me and also signed for me to be able to apply for my license. That was at the end of the year of 2010. Now seven years later, I’m 32 years old and running a successful hvac business.
We have a A+ rating with the local BBB. Last year we were named 2016 top rheem classic dealer. This year we are on schedule to exceed last year’s revenue by 40% We are growing thanks to our customers and we plan to be one of the biggest hvac companies in this area within the next 5 years.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not, there is a lot of learning involved. When I first started, I was just an installer then I was learning maintenance then I learned and studied to be a technician. At no point during that time did I take any business classes, so once I earned my license and opened my own business I really had no business knowledge. It was a struggle learning to price correctly, keep up with all required paperwork, taxes and so much more. I can honestly say the first few years we did not make any money. There is just so much to learn, I’m still learning and I hope I continue to learn even more as we grow and face new challenges.
5 Star HVAC Contractors – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We do it all! we repair, service, maintenance and install new systems, as well as new construction, both residential and commercial. We offer 24 hr. service 7 days a week. A big thing we offer is a 1 year test drive guarantee on new systems. So basically, when we install a new complete system for you, within that year if it’s not working as it should or as we said it would and we can’t fix it, we’ll take it out of your home and refund you 100% of your investment. The thing I’m most proud of is the way communicate with our customers, I give our customers my personal number to call or text any time day or night. “And they do” The biggest thing for me is what do we do after the job is complete and we have been paid. Most other companies will tell you whatever you want to hear to get your money and be very quick to respond to emails or phone calls, but once they have your money maybe they don’t answer as quickly or respond to that email. Well here at 5 Star HVAC I take that very serious, after any job we answer, respond to any calls or emails right away, I feel even more responsible now than before to answer any questions or fix any issues you may have. I think it’s how a company treats you after the sale is what really counts. Here we treat our customers as family.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment I would have to say was the births of my children. There’s nothing better than to know you have kids that now look up to you and follow you. Now it’s up to me to make them proud.
